Christians believe that salvation doesn’t come through rituals or ceremonies. As the apostle Paul explains in Epistle to the Ephesians 2:8–9, we are saved by grace through faith—not by our works. However, believers still observe Holy Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper. During this time, we eat bread and drink wine or grape juice as a way of remembering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Why do we practice this? To understand, we have to go back to the time when the Israelites were in Egypt. On the night God judged Egypt, a final plague took the life of every firstborn in Egyptian households. But God instructed His people to place the blood of a lamb on their doorposts. He promised in Book of Exodus 12:13 that when He saw the blood, He would pass over them and spare their lives. That same night, they were told to prepare a special meal with roasted lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and wine.

This special meal became known as Passover because God “passed over” the homes marked with the lamb’s blood. Anyone who had the blood on their doorposts was protected from death. After the Israelites left Egypt, they were instructed to celebrate Passover each year as a reminder of God’s protection and deliverance.

Passover also pointed forward to something greater. It was a picture of what Jesus Christ would do for us on the cross. Jesus is the perfect “Lamb of God” (John 1:29), and when we place our faith in Him, His sacrifice covers us. Just as in Egypt, God’s judgment passes over us, and we are saved by His mercy. While people in earlier times didn’t fully understand this, we now see clearly the depth of God’s grace through Christ.

As it says in Book of Psalms 66:20, God has not rejected our prayers or withheld His mercy.

LET US PRAY!
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for sending Jesus, Your perfect Son, to be the ultimate Passover Lamb. Just as the blood of the lamb once saved Your people in Egypt, so His blood saves us from sin and death.

Lord Jesus, we remember Your sacrifice—Your body broken and Your blood poured out for our redemption. Thank You for loving us so deeply, for taking our place, and for giving us eternal life through Your death and resurrection.

As we reflect on Your sacrifice, help us to live in gratitude, holiness, and obedience. May Your example of love guide our hearts and our actions every day. And Lord, let us never forget that because of You, we are forgiven, freed, and made whole.

We honor You, we praise You, and we proclaim You as our Savior and Passover Lamb.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
