Ravan Scott-Channer was born in the beautiful country of Guyana, South America. As a child, she enjoyed coloring the learning aids which her mom hand drew for her classroom and teaching her dolls and other toys. It was in these early stages in my life where Ravan developed a love for learning. Ravan says her path has always been clear given she comes from a family of educators. She began her first teaching job in Brooklyn where she worked for a charter school for two years. She later transitioned into the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE). In the DOE, Ravan served in many roles such as a general education teacher, a literacy coach, and a special education teacher.
How do you maintain your sense of purpose and passion for your work, even during difficult or monotonous times?
I maintain my sense of purpose, by always thinking about my “Why”. This is especially important why I am faced with various challenges. As a general education teacher, I had to meet the needs of various learners while teaching in overcrowded classrooms. As a literacy coach, I supported teachers who were unwilling or hesitant to shift their teaching practices to improve student outcomes as readers. As a special education teacher, I am learning how to service a high need population by providing just the right amount of support that will allow them to think critically, be independent, and develop a love for learning. Regardless of my role in a school building, my ultimate goal is to provide students with a well rounded education that will allow them to be prepared for the 21st century world of work, college and career readiness. This is my Why. It’s why I wake up, why I am never late, why I create an environment of respect and rapport, why I reflect to see what went well, and what I can do better. This is Why I love teaching.
How does your faith help you find meaning in the labor you do, especially if the work is challenging or undervalued?
Although I love my job, I will admit. It is not a 9-5. I am often working early in the morning, late at night, during mini breaks and vacation. I begin each day with devotion. I ask God for patience, tolerance, and wisdom to deal with the daily challenges. As a teacher, I often collaborate with a diverse group of people. They don’t often share my views or perspective so I pray that God allows me to share my opinions in a respectful manner and with love. I never want to be an obstacle in someone’s path. I pray for wisdom, that God will help me meet the needs of my students and I pray for guidance, that I will make choices that will be of service to Him, my students, and my community.
