“And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness…” –Joel 2:13 (KJV)
The people of Judah were facing devastation, but God’s message wasn’t simply about judgment—it was an invitation to come back to Him. God wasn’t looking for an outward display of religion. He wanted something deeper: a changed heart.
“Rend your heart, and not your garments.”
In other words, God isn’t impressed by appearances. We can look like everything is fine on the outside while our hearts are far from Him. True repentance begins when we become honest with God and allow Him to transform us from the inside out.
And notice what kind of God is calling us back:
He is gracious.
He is merciful.
He is patient.
He is full of kindness.
Your failures don’t surprise God. Your mistakes don’t make Him stop loving you. When He calls you back, He isn’t calling you back to shame—He’s calling you back to relationship.
“Even Now”
Joel 2:12 begins with two powerful words:
“Therefore also now…”
Even now.
Even after the mistakes.
Even after the wandering.
Even after the disappointment.
Even after the prayers you stopped praying.
Even after the season where you felt distant from God.
Even now, you can return.
God’s grace is not limited by how far you’ve gone. The enemy may tell you that you’ve waited too long, but God says, “Return to Me.”
God Can Restore
Joel 2:25 says:
“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…”
God is not only interested in forgiving you—He is also able to restore.
Some seasons may have taken your peace, your joy, your confidence, or opportunities you thought you’d never get back. But God specializes in bringing life out of devastated places.
Restoration doesn’t always mean God recreates the past exactly as it was. Sometimes He gives you something greater, deeper, and more meaningful than what you lost.
God isn’t asking you to pretend you’re okay. He’s asking you to return to Him with your whole heart.
Even now. God is still calling you home.
LET US PRAY!
Our Father,
Thank You for reminding us that we can always return to You. Forgive us for the times we’ve allowed distractions, fear, disappointment, or sin to pull our hearts away from You.
Lord, we don’t want to simply look like we belong to You—we want our hearts to truly belong to You. Change us from the inside out.
Restore the areas of our lives that have been broken. Restore our joy, faith, peace, and desire to seek You.
Help me remember that Your mercy is greater than my mistakes and Your grace is greater than my failures.
Even now, we choose to return to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
